When we are sick, we want an uncommon doctor; when we have a construction job to do, we want an uncommon engineer, and when we are at war, we want an uncommon general. It is only when we get into politics that we are satisfied with the common man. -- Herbert Hoover
It was probably not all that hard to guess, but we are both indeed enthusiastic fans of all Philadelphia sports teams. And, considering our recent efforts with ASO, it should be clear to you that we also have a passion for politics. So why not combine the two? We are not sure if the following is more fitting in the sports page or here but either way, here it goes…..
Most of us know (& all of us should after Chase Utley’s infamous “speech” [search Chase Utley World Champions speech at youtube.com]), the Philadelphia Phillies won the MLB World Series last year, securing the city’s first professional championship in 25 years. Since that wonderful day(s), many Philadelphia natives, as well as outsiders, have said that Philly fans have become complacent and less fanatical since tasting the sweetness of a championship. Assuming that statement has an ounce of validity to it (& we aren’t admitting anything), we reply that no Philly fan should be satisfied with one ring! Why can’t we Philly fans be like those pains in the neck from Boston with their Red Sox and Patriots teams who are often referred to as "dynasties?"
Personally, we see a parallel between this thinking and our current Administration – why do we as citizens of this great Nation have to be satisfied with a compelling Commander-in-Chief who has little to show for his efforts? Sure, President Obama can read strategically written speeches well and even gets us stirred up from time-to-time, but the fact remains that he hadn’t accomplished much before becoming our President and unfortunately, he has continued that pattern as our leader. Yes, becoming POTUS is quite an accomplishment, but the way he got there was through timing and excellent campaigning, not a solid or worthy resume. So, the question remains: why must we be satisfied with the current political situation? And, the answer is we don’t.
We Philly fans and U.S. citizens deserve and demand more; we deserve results. So to the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers (& Sixers) – get us another parade AND to President Obama – get something done (rather than just talking about it on prime time TV) that will secure our Nation, protect its inhabitants from those that wish us harm, fix our economy, and improve our health care.
