For many of us in the Nation’s Capitol, this week opens with our hearts heavy and our concentration muddled with a flood of bitter sweet memories. Those memories are about the late Senator Ted Stevens. This writer wanted to pen a few words about our friend especially for those who can't or won't be making the country wide trip to Alaska this Wednesday to celebrate the Senator’s life.
While we may desperately want to attend the services and pay our respects, for one reason or another, it just isn't possible. So to honor “Uncle Ted” with dignity and respect, remember his determination and pit bull drive when it came to doing what he thought was right for his family and the Alaska he so dearly loved. They say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. With this in mind, if you love your work, do it well. If you love your family, love them well. If you are passionate about your religion, espouse it well. If you are committed to a certain cause, serve it well.
As the weeks turn into months, and the months turn into years, we will each probably begin to emulate a few of our friend’s quirky “ Stevensisms.” If you happen to walk into a room and acknowledge your female friend or acquaintance with a “Hey Lady”…. you are an official member of the Stevens “family.” If you make your most impassioned argument by saying: “I just gotta tell ya”…. you are an official member of the Stevens “family.” If you can close your eyes and see the little twinkle in his eyes just before he burst into a smile and a laugh….you are an official member of the Stevens “family.” If you begin to be attracted to Hulk ties, well, maybe you should re-think your wardrobe choices, unless it is a gift from your young daughter. We will always miss you! “Well done my good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21
